Read the currency, not just the symbol
The Dominican peso is the local currency. A tourism quote may be expressed in US dollars, so ask whether a price is DOP or USD before accepting it. For a cash settlement in another currency, agree on the exchange calculation and the currency of any change before the service begins.
Build a practical cash reserve
List likely cash needs such as a small purchase, optional tips and any balance explicitly payable in cash. Carry denominations that match those purchases. Do not carry the entire holiday budget in one wallet or assume that a driver or small shop can change a large note.
Compare card and ATM terms
Check your bank’s foreign transaction and withdrawal fees before traveling. At an ATM or terminal, read the displayed conversion and fees rather than accepting the first screen automatically. Keep a second payment method separately. Report a retained card or an unfamiliar transaction to your bank using its verified contact channel.
Track deposits and outstanding balances
Save the receipt showing the total, deposit, remaining balance and currency. Ask whether a displayed amount covers one person, the whole vehicle, one direction or a round trip. The same check matters for excursions: transport, park access or extras may have separate conditions. Use the written confirmation to resolve differences before departure.

Imagine that the transfer is prepaid but the excursion requires a remaining balance. Write those as separate lines, including the currency and agreed payment method. The cash you carry for the excursion should not be counted again as spending money for meals and shopping. Reconcile receipts each evening so that a change of plans does not leave you guessing what is still owed.
