Accessible Punta Cana arrivals: airport assistance and vehicle questions

An accessible arrival is a chain of handovers, not a label on a vehicle. Explain what you need at each stage: leaving the aircraft, moving through the terminal, boarding transport and reaching the hotel room.

01

Arrange airline assistance first

Contact the airline before travel about assistance from the aircraft through the airport and any requirements for a mobility aid. Confirm what happens at connections as well as at PUJ. Keep written details available to airport staff. A request to a transfer company does not automatically reach the airline.

02

Describe the vehicle access you need

Tell the provider whether you can transfer to a vehicle seat, whether steps are manageable and whether you need to remain in a wheelchair. Ask for the actual boarding method and vehicle configuration. A larger van is not necessarily accessible. Obtain confirmation before paying for a vehicle that may not meet your needs.

03

Measure equipment and luggage

Provide the folded or unfolded dimensions, weight and any battery details requested by the airline or transport provider. Count accompanying luggage and passengers. Clarify who can assist with loading and whether you need a companion’s help. Avoid relying on a generic photograph as proof that your equipment fits.

04

Confirm the hotel-side handover

Ask the hotel about the specific entrance, room access and route from reception, not just whether it calls itself accessible. Share the arrival time and required assistance. If planning excursions, ask separately about boat boarding, surfaces and toilets; an accessible airport transfer does not establish an accessible day trip.

05

A planning example

Send a concise needs statement rather than only asking for an accessible vehicle: whether a seat transfer is possible, equipment dimensions, companion count and the assistance required. Ask the provider to confirm each point. Repeat the relevant details with the hotel and activity operator, because one organization’s confirmation does not bind the others.

Frequently asked questions

Is every private van wheelchair accessible?

No. Ask about the exact vehicle, boarding equipment and whether you must transfer to a seat.

Can I book a tour after confirming the transfer?

Review the tour’s own access conditions first. Boat boarding, terrain and facilities may present different requirements.
